Program Overview

Your Summer in Madrid program lasts 6 weeks (or up to 12 weeks) and is designed for students from all academic backgrounds. You will enroll in CIEE courses and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Enhance your experience with co-curricular and extracurricular activities while immersing yourself in Spanish culture. Live and learn in Madrid!

Featured Excursions

  • Visit the world heritage site of El Escorial – the largest Renaissance building in the world – built under the reign of King Philip II of Spain in the 1500s. Located in the northern mountains – about a one-hour drive north of Madrid city – El Escorial gives visitors a view of daily life in the royal court and its impressive architecture, where decisions were made at the height of the Spanish Empire. Students also have an opportunity to explore the neighboring 18th-century village of San Lorenzo.

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Madrid will open doors for you to explore Spain's rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.  

Samples of past excursions and activities:

  • Explore beyond Madrid with day trips to the medieval city of Toledo and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Alcalá de Henares
  • Discover the flavors of Spain while learning to cook, making authentic paella or flipping a Spanish tortilla
  • Try kayaking and hiking to beat the heat, or dip into one of Madrid's many public swimming pools
