Temple University, Japan Campus: Kyoto opened in
Spring 2025, giving students another world-class destination for studying abroad, beyond our flagship location in
Tokyo. Located just 2.5 hours from Tokyo by bullet train, Kyoto offers a unique opportunity to study in the cultural and ancient capital of Japan, while still offering the best of city life. Kyoto is a base for many high-technology industries, commerce, and tourism. Japan’s eighth largest city, Kyoto has been named the “Best Big City in the World” in recent years. It is a livable, affordable city known for its beautiful landscapes, stunning architecture, delicious food, and friendly people.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Language of Instruction
English, except for Japanese and other language courses.
Course Load
Courses will be held Monday through Thursday (no classes held Fridays), with regular cultural excursions taking place in Kyoto and the surrounding area. With permission from students’ home institution, students may take one TUJ online course in addition to at least 9 in-person credits during the semester and at least 6 in-person credits during the summer. Typical course loads and credits by term:
- Semester: 4-5 courses (12-18 credits)
- Summer: 3-4 courses (9-12 credits)
*Non-Temple students should verify the minimum number of credit hours required by their home institutions.
Academic Areas
Temple Japan offers courses in Japanese language, Asian studies, GenEds, general electives and select upper-level major courses, allowing study abroad students to immerse themselves in Japanese language and Asian studies while completing other degree requirements abroad. A range of courses are available across various disciplines, including:
- Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management
In addition to coursework, credit-bearing internships are offered every term. Consider making an internship a part of your academic load to get even more out of your experience abroad.
Activities and Excursions
The Student Engagement team at Temple Japan offers many opportunities to enhance your experience and enrich your social and cultural life while in Kyoto:
- Excursions and field trips that enhance your understanding of Japanese culture, such as visits to Japanese festivals, workshops on traditional Japanese crafts, and overnight trips to other areas in Japan.
- Wide variety of student clubs & organizations for many interests
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility is limited to students who:
- Are at least 18 years old at the time of application
- Are enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at the time of application as well as during the semester prior to studying abroad.
- Will have completed at least two (2) semesters of college-level study by the start of the program.
- Meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement, on a 4.0 scale from all colleges/universities attended.
- Temple Semester Programs: 2.75
- Temple Summer Programs: 2.5
- Remain in good academic standing from the time of application until the start of your term abroad; students on academic warning are not eligible to participate.
We welcome the participation of qualified students from all U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities.

Pre-departure Preparations
Once accepted, we provide you with detailed pre-departure materials designed to guide you in preparing yourself for your time abroad. Pre-departure materials include:
- Course registration information
- Passport information and visa information
- Health and safety information
- Cultural preparation information and resources
- Travel and arrival information
Pre-departure Orientation
After your acceptance, our staff hosts pre-departure orientation sessions for all students.
Housing
Students will be able to take advantage of TUJ-arranged housing or can choose to find their own housing in Kyoto or nearby Osaka (independent housing is subject to home institution approval). We encourage students to apply to the program well before the deadline as the program and/or housing capacity may be limited.
On-site Orientation and Support
An on-site orientation takes place after you arrive in your host city and may include:
- Introductions to the faculty, staff, and resources of the program
- Facilities and neighborhood tour
- Cultural norms and expectations
- Review of health and safety matters and emergency procedures
- Cultural activities/excursions
Details about on-site orientation are provided to accepted students before departure.
